Oppo R1C Gets Pictured With iPhone-Like Design, Looks Beautiful

The Oppo R1C has been pictured in a series of hands on shots that make it feel like a combo between an iPhone, a Lumia and an Xperia. This unit had previously been certified under the codenamed R8207 by authorities in China.
1161847
The device has a glossy case and it measures a slim 6.85 mm in thickness, also packing a 5 inch 720p display, an octa core 1.5 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. There’s 16 GB of ROM inside, a 5 megapixel front camera, plus a 13 megapixel main shooter. Oppo R1C is expected to be released soon and its most interesting design aspect is the sapphire blue back, with a 3D mirror effect, apparently.
Just in case you’re wondering, the CPU mentioned above is a Snapdragon 615 and we’ll also get a microSD card slot, which is good for such a small body. Hopefully those stereo speakers at the bottom provide good sound and the metallic frame is sturdy.

Xolo Teases New Smartphones from Omega Series for December 5th Launch

Xolo has posted a fresh teaser on its Facebook page, promising to unveil new handsets from the Omega series this Friday, on December 5th. The company also posted a teaser on Twitter, saying “Coming soon. Block your date: 5th December, 2014″. The posting also includes the image shown below.
touchomega_xolo_launch
It reveals the silhouette of a smartphone and mentions the hashtag #TouchOmega. Xolo is not at its first attempt to hype things up, since it also pulled a similar teaser campaign in August, for the announcement of its Hive UI, their custom version of Android. Back then they also unveiled the first Hive UI phone, Xolo 8X-1000. The company launched in India the Xolo Opus 3 last month, a phone priced at an affordable rate and offering midrange specs.
That one was a dual SIM Android 4.4 KitKat model, with 720p 5 inch display and 1 GB of RAM. It also had an 8 megapixel camera at the back, a front 5 MP shooter and a 2500 mAh battery. Considering there’s a special teaser for the Omega series, we’re expecting a higher end experience here, particularly since the name also sounds ominous.

In Asia, daily deals are a hit. But online coupons? Not so much

Jacob Laukaitis is a location-independent entrepreneur, constantly traveling the world while running his own online ventures. He is currently a co-founder at online coupons websiteChameleonJohn.com.

I have been working in the online coupons space for quite some time now, and all of our business is in the United States because that’s the most profitable market. However, a few months ago I started researching dozens of other markets around the world, hoping to find another country for us to expand to. The data I found was interesting and insightful, but first, let me tell you a bit more about how the whole business works before getting into the numbers.

When somebody wants to buy products on a specific online store, they search for coupons on Google or other search engines. They find a website offering them, choose the promo code they like, and apply it on the checkout page at their desired shop.

Most e-commerce websites would be happy to convert at least one in 100 visitors into a paying customer. However, in the online coupons space, one percent would be considered a huge failure. Depending on the coupons, it’s possible to convert up to 40 percent of your visitors, meaning 40 visitors out of 100 actually buy something. That’s because the search traffic is so targeted – people already want to buy stuff before they even hit the search button.

So obviously the first thing I researched was the amount of searches specific stores get every month. I found that most people in Asia do not even know what coupons are. It’s funny that everybody uses daily deals in Indonesia (Groupon reportedly gets up to 10,000 transactions a day), but nobody knows what coupons are. Even though online coupons are not the same as daily deals, it’s still a wonderful way to save money.

Using Google Adwords, I took the main Indonesian coupon keywords and applied that to tens of different shops. These are the two that had the most searches (click to view full-size image):

Zalora:

And Lazada:

And that’s the same with pretty much all the Asian markets I looked at, such as Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. All showed a low level of search traffic.

However, there is one that stood out – India. I don’t know why, but people do know what online coupons are there and it seems they are being used all the time. Here are the searches for some Indian online stores for the main keywords in the country:

Flipkart:

SnapDeal:

The numbers are very different. What’s more, there are hundreds of other online stores in India that have thousands of searches and are worth pursuing, whereas I could hardly find one in Indonesia or other nearby markets. That’s the main reason why so many online coupon companies have already.

See: How Rocket Internet is Encouraging Coupon Clipping in India

So the takeaway is that if you wanted to run an online coupons website in most of Asian countries, you would have to educate the market, which is usually extremely expensive and time-consuming. On the other hand, e-commerce is growing bigger and bigger every year, and it’ll be a huge business in the future. So a company that manages to seize the Asian coupon markets will turn a huge profit five to 10 years from now. The only question is when should one enter the market so that they wouldn’t have to spend too many resources educating it, but still be early enough to seize a big chunk.

China’s Nciku shuts down, redirects users to LINE dictionary

Over the weekend, Chinese language learners looking for their favorite dictionary got greeted by a bunny instead.

Nciku, a popular online Chinese-English dictionary, now redirects to linedictionary.naver.com, the web version of Line’s Chinese-English Dictionary. Users who land on the site for the first time are shown a message informing them that Nciku is now ‘out of service’ and will be replaced by LINE Dictionary.

According to a Forbes piece from 2008, NHN launched Nciku as an early play at a launching a global-facing product. Before that, the company had positioned itself as a leader in Korea’s search engine space, but hadn’t yet cracked any foreign markets. Six years later, NHN’s channel for reaching users abroad is Line, the mobile messaging app that’s big in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and parts of South America.

Line has English-Chinese, English-Thai, and English-Indonesian dictionaries in its mobile suite. The new web version of Line Dictionary nee Nciku looks like an import of its corresponding mobile app. There’s no input fields handwriting – a must-have for any online Chinese-English dictionary – but the notice says it’s coming soon.

Chinese language learners stick with dictionaries like smokers stick with cigarette brands, and Nciku had its fair share of loyalists. Despite its long loading times and frequent crashes, it still had legions of defenders – including this writer, who saw the notice and wanted to cry.

Should we expect a new-and-improved Nciku under the Line brand? Or should we begin mourning? As evidenced by the work of Mike Love, founder of Pleco, building a dictionary that services (and monetizes on top of) the needs of hardcore Mandarin learners is a labor intensive but lucrative endeavor. For a big company like NHN, the returns on such an investment might not be high enough. But as long as Line Dictionary licenses the same dictionaries as Nciku, casual Nciku users ought to endure the transition just fine.

We’ve reached out to Line to ask about the future of Nciku and will update this piece if we hear back.

The death of Nciku isn’t the only loss Chinese language learners have suffered recently – Shooter.cn, a popular website “offering” Chinese subtitles for international films, closed its doors last week.

5.7 Inch 1280 * 720 Pixel HD IPS Screen

No.1 Note 4 looks Galaxy Note 4 very much, it also has 5.7 Inch 1280 * 720 Pixel HD IPS Screen, which provides me with the realistic visual effect when i watch movies. The 5.7inch size is a good one that i can treat it as a small tablet pc. So i can save money to buy a tablet PC. Whether i watch movies, play games, or view the pictures, the screen quality and screen color enable me to enjoy the good visual experience. This No.1 Note 4 has become my leisure device in my daily work and life.

MTK6582 Quad Core 1.3GHz + 1GB Ram 8GB Rom

No.1 Note 4 is powered by MTK6582 Quad core 1.3GHz CPU, although it's not as remarkable as Samsung galaxy note 4, i still am very glad to use it to play computer games. Because it is quite good and i didn't encounter something wrong when i play games or serach the Internet. Right now, i have no problems with it. The speed is really beyond my imagination.

8.0MP Back Camera 5.0MP Front Camera (Interpolation to 13.0MP Back Camera)

I also like photographing, if the phone doesn't have a good dual camera, i will not choose it. Fortunately, No.1 Note 4 has nice dual camera with 8.0MP Back Camera 5.0MP Front Camera and it can be interpolated to 13.0MP Back camera. Wherever i go, i take my smartphone to take nice pictures. Therefore, i can memorize the beautiful moment with my family, friends and others. At the same time, it can beautify my face with a quick shooting.

Latest Android4.4 kitkat OS

No.1 Note 4 runs Android4.4 kikat OS, which is the latest system right now. It provides more convenient experience, and operates faster than Android4.2 Jelly Bean OS. I guess that's the real reason that most people like Android4.4 than Android4.2.

Antutu Test
It has been tested by Antutu benchmark, and test score is up to 16757, which means it has nice overall performance, and it is better than other quad core smartphones.

Durable BatteryIt's built in 2800mAh battery, which supports long standby. i have tested it, if i play games by this smartphone, it can support up to 6-8 hours working without charging. This one also have the function to save 30% power than the conventional one. The good and durable battery is very important for No.1 Note 4.

In addition, it has a Stylus pen to help you manage your smartphone more simply and conveniently, it can support air gesture and motion to wave hands to pick up the phone or not, or view the pictures freely without touching the screen. This one has google play store to help me download what i want. I can also set up the language into my mother tongue. In all, it brings me much convenience and practice.

Netflix sets sail for Asia-Pacific with launches in Australia and New Zealand

Currently, there are around 340,000 people watching Netflix in Australia. This would be considered normal, except for one very odd fact: Netflix isn’t officially available in Australia as yet. At the moment these users are accessing the US version of Netflix by using a VPN and paying with a non-US credit card which Netflix, unlike competitors such as Amazon, allows you to do.

Netflix has taken notice of its gaining popularity down under and has decided to launch in Australia and New Zealand in March of next year. Netflix will have little competition in the region, as only a few services such as Quickflix or Foxtel’s Presto currently exist. Given that a sizable portion of the market that is willing to pay for online streaming sites is using Netflix already, this means Netflix’s biggest competitor is itself.

No pricing was announced in the company’s statement. If past launches in Australia by services such as Spotify are any indication, it is likely to be more expensive than the US rate (US$8.99 per month) by a few dollars.

The question persists however, what will happen to those already paying subscribers? It is unclear whether current Australian subscribers (using a rogue US account) will be forced to move over to a local subscription. There are many reasons why they may want to stay with their US subscriptions, namely the lower price and the bigger content libraries. It is assumed that not all the shows that are on the US Netflix will make it over to the Australian Netflix due to licensing deals and other factors, which was what happened when Netflix launched in the UK.

However, Netflix’s foray into Australia and New Zealand may be more than just a move to grab users that already know about it. Launching in those nations can be seen as a way for the streaming giant to get its foot through the door and increase awareness in surrounding Asian markets.

This post Netflix sets sail for Asia-Pacific with launches in Australia and New Zealand appeared first on Tech in Asia.
