As we already know, these stereo speakers alongside the uni-body metallic cases are the main features found on the HTC One phones, range of devices that opened our eyes on how a true flagship device should look like and also feel in our hand.
According to the latest rumors, we expect that HTC One M9 to arrive with a 5-inch Full HD display, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor clocked at 2.0 GHz, 3 GB of RAM, a 20.7-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash and Android 5.0 Lollipop.  The video teaser can be found here.

The Meizu MX5 has a long way to go till it gets launched

The Meizu MX5 has a long way to go till it gets launched, but that doesn’t stop various designers from preparing renders of the handset. What you’re seeing below is a render, that even includes some specs in the mix.
s_002e583df9aa4b0da26c092da355c60f
It was created by a Meizu fan in China and just like the MX4 Pro, the MX5 comes with a 5.5 inch 2K display and a fingerprint scanner. Said mechanism is found behind the Meizu halo. The handset has a glass back, much like a Sony Xperia phone and its camera features a dual LED flash in the mix. Suggested specs include a MediaTek processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 41 megapixel cam.
At best we’ll see this model in September, so there’s no point in rushing, particularly since the MX4 and its derived versions actually arrived a bit later than expected, close to the year end in 2014. If you ask me, the Meizu MX5 feels like it has  bumper around the edges and the camera feels a bit too small.

ASUS Registers 22% Drop In Q4 2014 Profit Compared to Previous Quarter, Ships 9.4 Million Tablets in 2014

Asustek Computer has announced its financial results for Q4 2014, that aren’t as good as some people expected. It appears that the company had a net profit of $143 million, a 22.41% decrease on quarter and a 20.77% decrease on year. It was mostly due to the foreign exchange loss, rather than the company’s performance.
asus shipments
Notebook and 2 in 1 hybrids accounted for 56% of the Q4 revenues, while smartphones stood for 14% and DIY motherboards and graphics cards reached 11%. Tablets were at 8% and others at 11%. As far as the regional markets are concerned, 44% of the consolidated revenues came from the Asia Pacific area, 31% from Europe and 25% from North and Latin Americas.
ASUS shipped 2.8 million tablets over the last 3 months of 2014, for a total of 9.4 million slates shipped during the whole year. Smartphones reached 8.5 million and in 2015 the company hopes to ship 17 million smartphones and 10 million tablets. Qualcomm chips will be used for 40 to 50% of smartphones shipped this year.

Lava Xtron Mega Tablet Listed on Official Website, With 10.1 Inch Screen, Action ATM Processor

Lava has debuted in India a new tablet, the Xtron Mega, but it wasn’t a proper launch, but rather a mere listing of the product on the official site. The device runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, which feels a bit old nowadays.
Lava-Xtron-mega
Lava Xtron Mega features a 10.1 inch screen with an IPS panel and a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, as well as an atypical Action ATM7029B processor, clocked at 1.3 GHz. There’s also 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, a microSD card slot on board, plus HDMI and Bluetooth. WiFi and AGPS are here as well, plus a 2 MP rear camera and a VGA front one.
The battery has a capacity of 6000 mAh and the design features pretty big screen bezels, as you can see. Obviously the device is made of plastic and sadly we don’t have a price tag or launch date for it. Lava released a 7 inch phone calling tablet last year in October with a price of $120 and similar storage and RAM, so I expect the Xtron Mega to cost about $30 more, if I can speculate.

Onda V820W is a Cheap Dual Boot Tablet Unboxed

More and more dual boot tablets are appearing, but usually we only get to see their press renders and specs list, without some hands on action. Today, one such model, the Onda V820W gets both unboxed and reviewed, with benchmarks included, courtesy of Gizchina.
P1010945
The product is available with 16 GB of storage or 32 GB and relies on an Intel Z3735F quad core x86 64 bit processor, clocked at up to 1.8 GHz. There’s also 2 GB of LPDDR3 RAM inside, a microSD card slot on board and a HDMI out port. Onda V820W has an 8 inch screen with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and colors and contrast are said to be very good.
P1010949
This model is priced at just $113 and its benchmarks are pretty solid, with 34821 points scored in AnTuTu or 803/2126 scored in GeekBench 3. This model runs both Android and Windows 8.1, both of them smoothly and lag-free. Games like Dead Trigger 2 and Real Racing 3 work like a charm here. Apparently, there are still a few bugs to iron out, most of them related to the way Android runs on the device.
P1010951
There’s a buggy Onda launcher in the mix and a ton of bloatware to face. The device features a 4000 mAh battery, that provides about 4.5 hours of screen on time, which is OK for a tablet barely past the $100 price mark. Overall, this sounds like a good dual boot device, but only if it gets rid of the Android problems. You can buy it here.

New iPad’s Air Plus/Pro Protective Case Shows up in Live Pictures

As we already found out through some rumors arrived on the web since last year, Apple plans that in 2015 to launch a large tablet, more precisely a device called iPad Air Plus / iPad Pro. After this series of leaks, we started to see a couple of pictures with its body elements, and cases developed for this model.
phonearena.com Leaked-case-confirms-th...nch-Apple-iPad-is-coming
Today we get the chance to take a look on a couple of new live pictures with a case designed for iPad Air Plus, accessory that is revealed by nowhereelse.fr. As we can see, this case is pretty similar to the iPad Air one, the differences being represented by the outputs for those four stereo speakers that will be found on the 12+ inch slate.
phonearena.com pads
In the same time, there’s a new information about the fact that iPad’s Air Plus screen will have a size between 12.2 and 12.9 inch. This tablet could bring in the package a dedicated stylus too, being a model designed more for the business enviroment. It remains to see what any other leaks are going to show next.

The VAIO brand is already preparing the launch of a cool phone and they also have some hardcore tablets coming

The VAIO brand is already preparing the launch of a cool phone and they also have some hardcore tablets coming, according to the latest speculation. The company is preparing a slate called VAIO Z Canvas, that’s said to be coming in May.
image[4]
The product was only known as the “VAIO prototype tablet” for a while, but new details have surfaced today. It appears the product will also include a keyboard accessory in the mix and it resemble the Microsoft Surface in its usage pattern. The specs of the VAIO Z Canvas are said to include an Intel Core i7 processor, Intel Iris Pro graphics and a 12.3 inch screen.
The display will offer a 2560 x 1704 pixel resolution, 8 or 16 GB of RAM and probably a lot of SSD storage, up to 256 GB to be more precise. I expect the design to be pretty similar to the one of the Microsoft Surface and a stylus is also not out of the picture.

Wear Mini Launcher update brings a refreshed companion app and some new features

Google’s goal with Android Wear is to let you navigate through the OS with your voice, without the need to rely on touch navigation. However, sometimes its difficult to use voice navigation in certain situations. And because Google would like you to rely on your voice, it makes launching apps or performing simple tasks more difficult than it should be. Wear Mini Launcher is an app that aims to help with that problem. In fact, the app is receiving an update to version 3.0 that brings a few new features to the third party Android Wear launcher.

The biggest change in the update is the companion app, which now has its fix of Material Design. The app sports an all-around lighter color scheme, new toggles and many more enhancements. It doesn’t have a navigation drawer, so you’ll need to rely on swiping between the different tabs for navigation.

The companion app wasn’t the only thing to get an update. The developer has also added a few key changes to the launcher itself including double tap on an app to for ‘sticky’ mode, long tap an app to manage it, plus a few others. Take a look at the full changelog below:

  • Material design for the phone’s app
  • Double tap an app for sticky mode
  • Long tap an app to manage it
  • New tool: disconnection notification
  • New Quick Setting to lock screen on
  • New translations

Speaking from personal experience, I’d have a tough time using Android Wear without Wear Mini Launcher. If you have a Wear device, you should definitely check this out. And if you already have it, head to the Play Store link below to grab your update.

HTC One M7 Unlocked and Developer Editions receiving Lollipop update

We’ve already seen the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop roll out to Sprint and Google Play Edition variants of the HTC One M7, but if you’re the lucky owner of an Unlocked or Developer Edition M7, you should be getting the update as we speak. HTC’s Mo Versi took to Twitter to announce that the two variants would see the update today.

HTC One (M7) Unlocked and Dev owners! Enjoy the Lollipop update! OTA has been released. #HTCAdvantage

— Mo (@moversi) February 5, 2015

Less than a week ago, HTC announced that they wouldn’t hit their promised 90-day goal to bring Lollipop to carrier variants of the M8 and M7. This disappointed quite a few users, though HTC did have a valid reason for the delay. We don’t have any information as to when other carrier variants will see the update, but we’d imagine it should roll out sometime soon.

The HTC One M7 is almost two years old, though many would still consider it a great Android device. If you’d like to pick one up for yourself, you can grab one off-contract for as low as $149.99.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Lollipop hasn’t actually rolled out on too many devices quite yet. In the latest Android distribution numbers, Lollipop is only on 1.6% of Android devices so far. So, if you’re the lucky owner of an Unlocked or Dev. Edition M7, consider yourself lucky!

Pirate3D raises $2M, plans pro printer targeted at architects and designers

Like any startup, Pirate3D’s journey has not always been a smooth upward climb. The company, which makes affordable yet stylish 3D printers, received US$1.43 million through a crowdfunding campaign in June 2013 – a record for a Singapore company that still stands today. But it later faced delivery delays caused by manufacturing and design problems, leading to plenty of irate customers demanding refunds. The company returned money to just under 15 percent of backers at the time of writing.

The setbacks have not deterred investors from pouring more money into Pirate3D though. The startup told Tech in Asia that it has raised US$2 million in a seed round involving individual investors from Singapore and Germany. Also, a quarter of the money came from Low Capital Management, a Singapore-based family office. The startup had a pre-money valuation of over US$8 million, and it plans to raise another US$3 to US$5 million before the year ends.

The funds will go towards fulfilling existing orders and refund requests, expanding the R&D team, and increasing manufacturing capabilities. “[We want] to really ramp up production and get those sweet volume discounts. If we buy materials in bulk we save 25 to 30 percent off the printer bill of materials price, which is fantastic,” Pirate3D co-founder Brendan Goh tells Tech in Asia.

The new round, which arrived in the midst of the refund requests and shipment delays, does raise the question: did it need the money to survive through the challenges and meet its obligations? “Yes and no,” Goh says, adding that the company would face a “tight squeeze” if it did not fundraise due to staffing and other costs. But getting new investment does give the team the opportunity to focus on measures that will grow the company.

For example, it will sell its products in new markets in places like the Middle East and Africa, and reach out to more channels, like specialist retailers and distributors. “We realize that 3D printing doesn’t fare too well on plain big box retail,” says Goh, referring to large retail stores. In his opinion, the best way to sell 3D printers is not to have them sit on the shelf, but to station an Apple Genius type person to explain the technology to consumers, who’d buy it online later. “Retail becomes more of a showroom which is something most brick and mortar retailers are seeing with most products actually.”

Pirate3D will also move into new product lines, including a 3D printer larger than its consumer-focused Buccaneer model. It is designed for professionals like architects and designers. While the startup will still focus on consumers, Goh justifies the move by saying that they’ve found a need in the market for a model that’s “superbly quick and reliable and under $5,000.”

Compared to the Buccaneer, the new product will emphasize speed and printing size over precision, because architects and designs are typically more concerned about visualizing ideas than making sure their printouts fit the dimensions exactly.

With the hype over 3D printing, we easily forget that the industry still has a long way to go before reaching mass adoption. While analysts predict that total spending on 3D printing could grow to as much as US$13.4 billion by 2018, the bulk of it will come from industrial applications rather than consumer ones. Sales of consumer 3D printers could increase to 850,000 units by then, but that’s a tiny drop compared to the volume sales of many other consumer gadgets.

Assuming that the industry follows the path predicted by analysts, focusing on professional usage may be a good strategy for Pirate3D. Given how competitive the consumer 3D printing market has become, winning a small slice of a tiny pie probably isn’t what the startup should aspire towards.

Goh confirms that Pirate3D has shifted away from a pure-consumer focus at the beginning. “I wouldn’t say consumer printers won’t work but when you deal with a certain segment and you see some needs there, why leave money on the table?”

Samsung NX500: an awesome camera with power to throw around

Samsung NX500: an awesome camera with power to throw around

Samsung has just announced its NX500 camera, a shooter that looks good, shoots great selfies and comes with power to please even semi-professionals. For starters, it comes with a 28 MP APS-C sensor. It can record 4K video at 24 fps and maxes out at 51,200 ISO.
In addition, you can flip the display all the way around and see what’s going on. You can even take advantage of WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC for wireless connectivity and connections to other devices. Pair that with a 16-50 mm lens and you have a winner… one that costs $799.99.
Opinion: Not a cheap camera, but it looks very much worth it to those who will really take advantage of all its features. Enthusiasts and professionals will still prefer their DSLR cameras, but this is a great camera for those who really care for portability and looks. Not to mention, features.

Google Search will soon have tweets in real-time

Google Search will soon have tweets in real-time

Remember the good old days when Google’s search results included real-time tweets? The deal wasn’t renewed back in 2011, leaving many Twitter fans unhappy. If the latest reports are to be believed, things will go back to normal very soon.
Twitter is said to have reached a deal with Google and real-time tweets are said to come back to search results. The changes are expected to show up during “the first half of this year”, so you won’t have to wait much longer, either.
Opinion: Google will be the one paying here, which seems quite interesting. Will this deal take away from Google+ in search results? Regardless, we know many of you love Twitter, and soon it will work better with Google.

Photos for IS X starts rolling out to developers

Photos for IS X starts rolling out to developers

iPhoto and Aperture have served us very well, but sometimes a change is simply due. Apple knows this, and that is why they announced last year that they would be killing these apps and replacing them with an improved one.
The result is Photos for OSX, a new application that harnesses the power of the power of the cloud while keeping the software powerful. As a result, it’s expected to get a more advanced experience to iPhoto, while Aperture users will likely miss the “professional” software.
Today, Apple has started pushing Photos for OSX to developers, which should soon be followed by a public beta version.
Opinion: Apple has to find a way to please both iPhoto and Aperture users. Keeping the latter happy seems more like a challenge to me. I mean, we can’t possibly believe Photos for OSX will offer the same power as Aperture… for free.

Verizon Nexus 6 shows up in leaks

Verizon Nexus 6 shows up in leaks

Verizon is finally getting ready to launch the Nexus 6 in its network, but so far we haven’t seen how their version will look, or if it will have any differences. A new leak from Phandroid’s trusted sources suggests the phone will at least look the same, with only one difference.
Of course, Verizon will slap its logo on the device. There is no way around it, they always do. The rendered image shows Verizon’s logo in the lower back area of the device. Le’s just hope they don’t go nuts and put another logo in the front, an area of the phone we can’t see through this image.
Opinion: In the grand scheme of things, I don’t feel like this logo is a big deal. It’s in an acceptable place and we can’t really complain much. Will you be getting a Verizon Nexus 6?

Assassin’s Creed Rogue implements eye-tracking technology

Assassin’s Creed Rogue implements eye-tracking technology

Ubisoft is about to take its Assassin’s Creed franchise to the next level in a partnership with Tobii Tech. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Rogue will be the first blockbuster game to feature eye-tracking support, powered by Tobbi Tech’s game-optimized technology.
The game will take advantage of the Steel Series Sentry, a PC eye-tracking device. It’s still a bit unclear how it will work, but it seems like its main purpose will be to control the camera. It will be “complimentary” to the keyboard and mouse. And yes, this means consoles are not likely to get this feature.
Opinion: I was worried about what such features would entail. Does this mean I would always have to be looking at the screen? Apparently not, as the game would pause itself if you look away. We will have to see how well this works. It seems exciting! Check out this video to see more.
